Over 60s and Over 70s Closed Tournament 2019 – 2020
The Oxfordshire Squash Closed tournament for the Over 60s and Over 70s this year took place at Hithercroft on the 11th January 2020.
The top four Over 60s players currently in the County entered the competition along with another three strong entrants. Sadly last year’s winner, David Wright, did not join us as he has retired as a result of a recent heart attack and we all remembered Jim Lynn, recently passed away, who also played in last year’s event.
The Over 60s was strongly contested, but in the final Aubrey Bell ably dealt with David Kirk in a masterful display of controlled squash. The shield was sponsored by Trevor Cox.
In the Plate which was a round-robin of three people, it came down to the final match with Andrew Wilson, a seeded Over 60s but beaten in the first round, playing Andrew Smith who is possibly the current top over 65s player in the county. They had a titanic 5 setter with Andrew Smith just coming out the winner.
For the Over 70s probably the top four players in the County signed up for the tournament. This was run as a round-robin and again there was no one clear winner who beat all of the other three players. Although Trevor Cox was beaten in his game against Pete Ibson, Trevor finished with one more point and is the champion for this year.
The pictures show Aubrey getting his trophy from last year’s winner David Wright along with all the contestants of the day with the front row showing the two age group winners and the Over 60s plate.
